EPISODE #0683: The Brofist Of Absolute Disaster

- What is "In Wily's Defense"?
In Wily's Defense is a Megaman-based sprite comic set in a universe where Dr. Wily was the hero and Dr. Light was the villain.

At least, that's how it was originally.

It went off the rails some time after the second season and mutated into something else.

I make no apologies.

I started it on August 18th, 2003, and ended it on April 26th, 2007. It was more or less just an avenue of me trying to kill my boredom, and it turned into something that garnered me a cult following. I ended it when I ran into a creative block that prevented me from figuring out exactly how I wanted to continue the series past the third season.

- Why did you start the comic again?
I actually came up with the story that became the "Prism Master Saga" during the summer of 2009, when I thought of one very simple question, "What would a Megaman-esque story be like in the IWD universe?" At first, I was going to do it as an 8-bit four-panel comic (like Bob and George), and I actually do have a few comics from that version that I've not bothered putting on the internet yet. Some of the characters seen in this comic were designed during this short time period, although a couple went through last-minute revisions before the start of the comic.

Due to several other commitments, I had to start laying the groundwork for the sequel exceedingly slowly. I had come up with the general story early in the development cycle, but then I made the incredible stupid decision that if I was going to do a sequel, I was going to use a different sprite style for it. There was a long period throughout 2010 where I didn't think I was going to go through with making this comic and ended up repurposing an original character for this series into another series altogether: this character is still in the story in their original role.

After off-and-on work, I finally got to the point where I could get the ball rolling, and I finally climbed the two hurdles I had - starting to make the comics and, more importantly, retrofitting the old website so that I could upload the comic again.

As for the actual "why"... pretty much boredom. Like all things I do.

- Can I use your sprites?
Not of my original characters, but if you ask, I'll provide you with my edits of regular characters like Cut Man or Heat Man. Considering that, thus far, all of the characters in the sequel are original characters... you're pretty much stuck with the Power Battles stuff. XD

- How do you make the comics?
The comics themselves built in Paint Shop Pro 7 and sometimes edited in Adobe Photoshop. Rarely the GIMP, but the GIMP kinda sucks.

I work off of a loose guideline, but since the very beginning of the comic all the way up to now, I've always preferred raw stream of consciousness when writing every bit of dialogue in the comic. It's a product of what I call "creative schitzophrenia", where I just let the characters talk to each other and see how they play off of one another.

Basically, I just plain don't write scripts for this comic. I know, it's poor of me to do it and I've had plenty of unchecked typos in the dialogue of this comic because of that. Not to mention that there's been an occasion or two where I just plain have no punchline.

At the same time, I just think my stream of consciousness is funnier than if I tried to script everything beforehand, and it's also way more fun to do it that way than to just stare at the inky blackness of Notepad+ as I normally would. It's effectively become the comic's style, and I'm perfectly okay with that.

- Where do you get your sprites?
During the 2003-2007 series, most of my sprites were taken from Megaman 7 and Megaman: Power Fighters/Battles, and they're readily available here. Several additional characters were edited out of Megaman 7 sprites, or were public domain sprites drawn by such folks as Deccus or Ran Cossack. I found most of those at the People's Sprites, but the site's long since been hacked, so it's not really worth linking to.

Just about all of the sprites I use in the current series are custom edits, based on the style of the two Custom Beat Draglade games. The bases I used were ripped by Grim, the guy who runs the Sprite Database.

There are a few characters I drew from scratch, namely Metool-styled characters like Don Bluehat and Freeze Man, and one or two of the Prism Masters.

- When do you update In Wily's Defense?
Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. As I'm on a regular sleeping schedule (unlike the original IWD days), I shouldn't miss an update. Unless the website colllapses or I end up taking a ridiculous "nap" from 6PM to 6AM like I've done sometimes.

- Why don't you have an author character?
Because author characters are lazy writing and I have enough lazy writing going on in the comic without resorting to such things. I love Bob and George as one of my all-time favorite webcomics, but most of its little quirks are things that just don't work when other people replicate them. Author characters being the chief culprit.

I do have an avatar character, Shiori. But I have no character that represents myself, and that's the way I think I'll keep it.

Also, any mention of blue monkeys will be responded with immolation. You have been warned.

- Can I give you ideas for your comic?
I'm perfectly content with doing everything myself. The story is pretty well settled in my head and any stalling I do is merely just for my own amusement rather than me having no ideas. After all, as stated above, this comic is more or less an avenue of me trying to kill boredom.

- Can I have a cameo in the comic?
There were some characters who appeared in this comic as cameos in more-or-less major roles (Sphere is the chief culprit here), but generally speaking? No. I have some characters made by other people who have been drawn into the style of the comic's sprites, but none of those characters will be used in any capacity other than "background fodder".

I will say that your chances of randomly appearing in the comic are higher if A) I know you, B) your character has an interesting human/robot design, and C) you didn't ask me in the first place.

- What is "Two Doctors"?
I created the comic that became Two Doctors last year (around May 2010) out of a desire to do some traditional Megaman humor revolving around the Robot Masters, as opposed to what happened with In Wily's Defense, where it went so completely off the rails that the current series is effectively a Megaman comic that doesn't have Megaman in it.

Ironically, Two Doctors doesn't have Megaman himself in it.

There is an extremely loose continuity with Two Doctors and it should certainly not be taken seriously. It's basically just a little gag comic I made up when I was bored one month last year, and you're seeing what resulted from that boredom. More will be made when I'm done with that particular buffer.

I don't really have a particular update schedule since I often forget about it, but look for them on Thursdays and Sundays.

- Two Doctors is just a single panel comic, so why can't you update it more often?
Because shut up.
